Lee 201 (Full C.T. Blue) is a blue conversion gel that shifts tungsten light (3200 K) to daylight (5700 K) color temperature.

Overview

Lee 201, marketed by the manufacturer as Full C.T. Blue (Full Colour Temperature Blue, often abbreviated as CTB), is a color correction filter (conversion filter) from the British manufacturer LEE Filters. It is one of the most widely used lighting filters on set and converts the warm light color of artificial light/halogen spotlights (Tungsten, 3200 K) to the cooler tone of daylight (5700 K). With the full correction, Tungsten units can be matched in color to incident daylight or to HMI/LED daylight sources.

The filter belongs to the same product family as the weaker gradations Lee 202 (Half C.T. Blue) and Lee 203 (Quarter C.T. Blue), which allow for partial corrections.

Mired Shift-137

Transmission (Daylight)34 %

The negative Mired shift of -137 indicates the cooling (blue-shifting) effect. Since the filter only transmits about a third of the light, the light loss when using the full correction is considerable.

On-Set Usage

Typical applications:

  • Matching Tungsten to Daylight: Placed in front of artificial light sources (e.g., Fresnel, Blondel/Redhead) or attached to the barn doors so their light matches the camera's daylight white balance.
  • Window/Mixed Light Situations: To match interior artificial light to incident daylight or HMI sources.
  • Creative Use: Deliberate cool, bluish light character, for example, for night or moonlight effects.

Lee 201 is produced as a heat-resistant polyester film and is available in sheets as well as rolls of various widths. Due to the significant light loss, gaffers often opt for the partial corrections 202 or 203 when working with a tight lighting budget.
