Lee 158 "Deep Orange" is a saturated deep orange lighting gel used by gaffers for fire and sunset effects.

Overview

Lee 158 "Deep Orange" is a colored lighting filter (gel) from the color range of LEE Filters. The number 158 is the fixed product number within the LEE color series; it does not represent wattage, an ANSI lamp code, or a grip device, but clearly a specific hue.

158 is a rich, deep orange hue that deliberately leans towards orange/yellow-orange, avoiding pinkish/red tones. It belongs to the group of dense, strongly saturated color filters and is stretched over existing light sources (typically Tungsten/3200 K or corresponding LED sources) to color their light.

Technical Data

Transmission values according to the manufacturer (Y = brightness transmission) depend on the color temperature of the source:

Light SourceTransmission Y
Tungsten (3200 K)40.6
Daylight (6774 K)29.9

Available in standard LEE formats:

  • Half Sheet: 0.61 m x 0.53 m (24" x 21")
  • Full Sheet: 1.22 m x 0.53 m (48" x 21")
  • Roll: 7.62 m x 1.22 m (25' x 48")

For LED sources with high color temperature, LEE offers a separate CL158 Cool LED variant, which visually corresponds to the classic 158 on a 3200-K Tungsten lamp when used with a cool LED source.

Usage on Set

158 is a workhorse for warm, intense lighting moods. Typical applications:

  • Fire/Flame Effects: on sources simulating flickering firelight.
  • Sunset / "Magic Hour": as part of a warm palette for window or background lighting.
  • Backlight and mood-enhancing accent lighting.
  • Mood/Event Lighting for party or stage atmosphere.

Due to its high saturation, 158 noticeably absorbs light – light loss compared to the unfiltered source must be accounted for in exposure planning. Like all filters of this density, 158 should be used on a sufficiently cooled or ventilated fixture to prevent premature fading.
