Technical Details

The light source achieves a color temperature of 5600K (daylight) with a CRI value of 95. The emitted beam angle is 60° without additional optics. The system operates with an electronic ballast, enabling flicker-free operation from 50 fps. The reflector is based on a faceted multi-mirror design with 91 individual mirror elements. Connections include DMX-512 control and a hot-restrike function for immediate reignition after a power failure. The housing is IP54 rated for dust and splash protection.

History & Development

K5600 Lighting introduced the Bug series in 1998, with the Bug 1600 entering the market in 2001 as a mid-range option between the Bug 800 and Bug 2500. The design revolutionized HMI lights by combining high light output with drastically reduced weight compared to conventional 1.2K HMI systems. In 2015, a hardware update was implemented with improved electronics and optimized heat dissipation.

Practical Use in Film

Typical applications include daylight matching through windows, fill light in exterior scenes, and as a mobile key light solution. The compact form factor allows for positioning in tight spaces or on camera rigs. Multiple Bug 1600s were used for moving shots in "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015). The rapid setup time of under 3 minutes makes the system ideal for run-and-gun productions. Disadvantages: limited focusability and higher acquisition costs compared to tungsten alternatives.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Arri M8 (800W), the Bug 1600 offers double the light output with only 20% more weight. LED alternatives like the Aputure 600D achieve similar lux values with variable color temperature, but with a larger housing. The Bug 1600 excels through the pinpoint light characteristic of true HMI technology compared to more diffuse LED panels. Modern successors increasingly integrate app control and advanced DMX functions.

Als DoP schätze ich den Bug 1600 für seine knackige Lichtcharakteristik – die harten Schatten und der punktuelle Charakter geben mir deutlich mehr Kontrolle über die Bildplastizität als diffuse LED-Flächen. Bei Available-Light-Situationen matche ich damit problemlos vorhandenes Tageslicht durch Fenster, ohne stundenlang mit Farbfolien experimentieren zu müssen.

Der Bug 1600 gibt mir die Flexibilität, auch in beengten Locations oder bei spontanen Schauplatzwechseln schnell professionelle Lichtstimmung zu schaffen. Seine kompakte Größe bedeutet, dass meine Schauspieler nicht von monströsen Lichtstativen eingeschüchtert werden, während die HMI-Power trotzdem genug Durchschlagskraft für dramatische Lichtführung bietet.

Producer

Mit 2,8 kg Gewicht spare ich erhebliche Transport- und Logistikkosten gegenüber traditionellen HMI-Setups – ein Kameraassistent kann problemlos zwei Units tragen. Der schnelle Aufbau reduziert Standzeiten, auch wenn die Tagesmiete von etwa 80-120 Euro über LED-Alternativen liegt, amortisiert sich das durch gesparte Arbeitszeit.
