Gyro-stabilized remote camera head by Filmotechnic for smooth aerial and vehicle-mounted shots from cranes, dollies, and helicopters.

Overview

The Flight Head is a gyro-stabilized, remote-controlled camera head (Remote Head) manufactured by Filmotechnic. It is not a light source or grip accessory, but an actively stabilized pan-tilt-roll head that carries the camera and is moved via remote control. The gyro stabilization compensates for shocks and vibrations, ensuring a smooth, floating image even during fast or rough movements. Filmotechnic received an Academy Award (AMPAS) for this technology.

The Flight Head is offered as a model series; common variants include Flight Head V, Flight Head 6/6S, Flight Head VII, Flight Head XL, as well as compact versions like Apex and Colibri. Most models operate in 3 axes (pan, tilt, roll); individual variants are offered in 3- or 4-axis configurations.

On-Set Usage

The Flight Head is used wherever the camera is moved dynamically and mechanical stabilization alone is insufficient. Typical mounting platforms include camera cranes and telescopic cranes, dollies, camera cars, quad bikes, helicopters, and cablecam systems. Connection is usually made via the standardized Mitchell mount.

  • Tracking shots and action: smooth images during fast movements over uneven terrain.
  • Aerial and water shots: stabilization despite vibrations from helicopters or boats.
  • Crane and cablecam work: precise remote control of pan, tilt, and roll over long distances.
  • Heavy configurations: larger models like the XL can carry 3D rigs and camera arrays with high payloads.

The head is operated by a remote operator via a separate control console; the high payload allows the use of full-fledged cinema cameras and lenses, rather than just lightweight gimbal setups.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
