Filmotechnic is a Ukrainian manufacturer of vehicle-mounted, gyro-stabilized camera crane systems, known for the Russian Arm (now U-Crane) and Flight Head.

Overview

Filmotechnic is a Kyiv (Ukraine)-based manufacturer and rental house for specialized camera equipment for film and television, founded by engineer Anatoliy Kokush. The company is best known for its vehicle-mounted, gyro-stabilized camera crane systems. Its most famous product is the telescopic camera crane, which for a long time went by the nickname "Russian Arm" and was renamed "U-Crane" in late February 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Filmotechnic equipment has been used in major productions such as Titanic, War of the Worlds, Transformers, and Iron Man 2; the system is now rented out through an international network of licensed branches (including the USA, Canada, and Europe).

The System

The core consists of two components that work together:

  • U-Crane / "Russian Arm": a remote-controlled, gyro-stabilized camera crane mounted on the roof of a camera vehicle ("Arm Car," often based on an SUV). It allows for 360° pans around the tracked vehicle and is operated via a joystick console from inside the vehicle.
  • Flight Head: the gyro-stabilized remote head at the tip of the crane, which carries and stabilizes the camera on multiple axes (including Pan, Tilt, Roll).

The gyro-stabilization compensates for road bumps and vibrations, ensuring smooth, controlled shots even at high speeds and during turns.

On-Set Usage

The system is primarily used for shooting moving vehicles ("car-to-car"): the camera vehicle drives alongside the vehicle being filmed, while the arm guides the camera freely around the subject. Typical applications include chase scenes, car commercials, and dynamic action sequences. Operation is from inside the Arm Car, usually by a combination of a driver, crane/arm operator, and camera/head operator. Focus, iris, and zoom (FIZ) controls can be integrated for shot monitoring.

Award

For the concept and development of the gyro-stabilized camera crane ("Russian Arm") and the Flight Head, Anatoliy Kokush, Yuriy Popovsky, and Oleksiy Zolotarov received a Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (2005, presented in early 2006). Anatoliy Kokush also received another award for the Cascade crane series.
