U-Crane steht für Ukraine-Crane - eine Hommage an das Land der Erfinder nach der russischen Invasion 2022.
Gyro-stabilized, remote-controlled camera crane arm for tracking shots from camera vehicles; successor to the Russian Arm by Filmotechnic.
The U-Crane is a gyro-stabilized, remote-controlled camera crane arm mounted on the roof of a camera car (or other mobile platform such as a boat, bus, or train). It is used to film moving vehicles and other moving objects from almost any angle at high speed. The arm is operated entirely by joystick from inside the vehicle; at the end of the arm sits a gyro-stabilized remote head (Flight Head) carrying the camera.
The system was developed by Ukrainian film engineer Anatoliy Kokush and his company Filmotechnic. Technically, the device is named "AutoRobot"; for a long time, it was known by the nickname "Russian Arm". On March 1, 2022, Filmotechnic renamed the technology to "U-Crane" as a tribute to Ukraine as its country of origin. In 2005, Kokush received two Academy Awards in the Scientific and Engineering Award category, including for the concept and development of the gyro-stabilized camera crane (Russian Arm) and the Flight Head.
The following values refer to the U-Crane system according to the manufacturer's specifications (Filmotechnic). They may vary depending on the configuration and provider.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Reach (Standard, from center column) | 14 ft / approx. 4.3 m |
| Reach with Extension | 19 ft / approx. 5.8 m |
| Stabilized Axes (Arm) | Pan and Tilt, gyro-stabilized |
| Remote Head | Flight Head (3-axis, gyro-stabilized) |
| Max. Operating Speed | manufacturer dependent; Filmotechnic (Canada) states up to 180 km/h, other Filmotechnic/provider sites up to 130 mph (approx. 209 km/h) |
The U-Crane is the classic tool for car chases, car commercials, and dynamic driving shots. Because the arm remains stabilized while moving and the operator controls the head independently of the vehicle's movement, fluid circling shots, over-the-hood shots, and rapid angle changes can be achieved from a moving camera car on a passenger car. For tighter environments such as narrow streets, tunnels, low bridges, parking garages, or smaller sets, there is the more compact U-Crane Dynamic variant (formerly Autorobot Mini or Russian Arm Mini) with a shorter, lighter arm, which can be quickly rigged onto lighter support vehicles.
