Tessera is Brompton Technology's LED processing platform whose processors (including SX40) drive LED walls for virtual production and live events.

Overview

Brompton Tessera is the LED processing platform from British manufacturer Brompton Technology. It is not a luminaire or a grip item, but rather the hardware and software chain that prepares the image signal and distributes it to the individual LED panels of an LED wall. The platform comprises processors (e.g., SX40, S8, SQ200), associated receiver cards in the panels, and the Tessera software for calibration and control.

In virtual production (LED volumes, In-Camera VFX), Tessera is widely used because the processors are designed for interaction with the camera. Brompton technology was used in productions such as "The Mandalorian," "House of the Dragon," and "Barbie." The SX40 processor was awarded an Engineering Emmy by the Television Academy.

On-Set Usage

For on-camera work, the camera-related functions are particularly relevant. Genlock synchronizes the LED wall with the camera to avoid flicker and banding. ShutterSync aligns the panel control with the camera's shutter speed and frame rate, expanding the usable exposure and frame rate range. Dynamic Calibration and HDR support ensure uniform brightness and consistent color across the entire wall.

  • Genlock and ShutterSync for flicker-free recordings directly in camera.
  • Frame Remapping and Tracking Marker functions for virtual production workflows.
  • Color management up to ACES workflows (preset for ACEScg / AP1 primaries).
  • Low, defined system latency for interaction with camera tracking and render engine.

The image data is distributed from the processor via the network ports to the receiver cards in the individual panels; the software handles calibration, mapping, and image correction. Specific configuration, pixel capacity, and port assignment depend on the processor and panel type used.
