Broncolor Softbox

Overview

"Broncolor Softbox" refers to the softbox light shapers from the Swiss manufacturer Broncolor (Bron Elektronik AG, Allschwil). Broncolor has been building professional studio flash systems since 1958—generators with separate lamp heads as well as monolights—and the associated light shaper program. A softbox is not a standalone light source, but an attachment: it encloses the lamp head and transforms its hard point light into soft, diffused light with soft shadow edges via a diffuser. On film and photo sets, Broncolor softboxes are categorized as light shapers/light-shaping tools, not as luminaires themselves.

Design and Construction

The softboxes consist of a foldable frame with light-tight outer fabric and a reflective interior. The softness of the light can be controlled via two diffusion layers: an inner baffle and the front diffusion panel, which can be inserted or removed individually. Grids are available as accessories for more directional light.

The softboxes are mounted via the Broncolor Speedring (adapter ring), which connects the box to the lamp head. The current softbox program includes rectangular, square, strip, and octagonal (Octabox) shapes in various sizes.

Softboxes provide soft key or fill light for portrait, beauty, and product shots. Larger boxes produce softer light and gentler transitions, while smaller boxes yield a more directional, higher-contrast result. Octaboxes are valued for even illumination and round catchlights (eye reflections). The degree of diffusion and spread can be adjusted via the baffle, front panel, and grid. The program is compatible not only with Broncolor lamp heads but also with flash units from other manufacturers via suitable speedring adapters.
