Small PAR fixtures (typically PAR16 with MR16 lamps) used as accent and pinspot lights in tight spaces; industry slang.

Overview

Birdies (singular: Birdie) is an industry term originating from theater for particularly small PAR lights. Typically, these are fixtures of the PAR16 form factor, less commonly PAR20. The name is an allusion to golf: a birdie is "one under par" – thus, the mini-fixture is the smaller sibling of the usual PAR cans.

Birdies are very compact and very light. This allows them to be placed in locations where a normal PAR would not fit: hidden in the shot behind furniture, on shelves, on walls, or as disguised practicals. Typical applications include small pinspots, accent and edge lights, as well as illuminating tight areas like bar, counter, or hallway scenes.

Technical Characteristics

Birdies are equipped with various light sources, depending on the socket:

  • MR16 (Bi-Pin / Pin Base) – the classic variant, usually as a 12V low-voltage lamp.
  • Screw-base versions such as E27 / E17 or JDR-Medium Base for mains-powered lamps.

The 12V low-voltage variants require a pre-connected transformer/power supply; a single (often dimmable, electronic) ballast can power multiple birdies. There are also 120V direct mains versions that run hotter during operation. MR16 lamps have a dichroic reflector ("Cool Beam"), which dissipates some of the heat backward out of the housing, making the light beam comparatively cooler than that of classic theater lights.

Accessories and Handling

Typical PAR accessories in miniature form are available for birdies, including barn doors and gel frames for color gels/diffusion. Due to their small size, MR16 lamps are heat-sensitive – especially with tightly applied, heavy color gels, they can break when hot, so sufficient distance and ventilation must be ensured.

On-Set Use and LED Successors

On set, birdies are valued for their high luminous density in the smallest form factor and their good controllability. They are well-suited for pinpointing a detail without the fixture being obtrusive in the shot. Increasingly, classic incandescent birdies are being replaced by LED counterparts or by LED tape and similar compact LED solutions, which generate less heat and do not require a separate low-voltage transformer in the conventional sense.
