MR11

MR11 is a standardized multi-faceted reflector lamp type with 35 mm diameter and GU4 socket, commonly used as a 12V low-voltage spot in compact fixtures and set practicals.

Overview

MR11 is not a manufacturer or a fixture, but a standardized design designation for a lamp (the light source). MR stands for Multifaceted Reflector – a reflector with many individual facets that bundles the light into a defined spot or flood. The number indicates the reflector diameter in eighths of an inch: MR11 = 11/8 inch = 35 mm. The MR11 is thus the smaller sibling of the more common MR16 (50 mm).

Originally developed for projectors and accent/display lighting, the MR11 appears on film sets primarily where space is tight: in compact low-voltage spots, in practicals and props (e.g., desk or display case lights within the frame), in miniature and effect setups, and in battery-powered small lights. The small size allows for very tight light beams in a small space.

Technical Data

Verified, cross-manufacturer key data for the design:

FeatureValue
Reflector Diameter35 mm (11/8 inch)
BaseGU4 (Bi-Pin, 4 mm pin spacing)
Typical Operating Voltage12 V (Low voltage, requires transformer/ballast)
TechnologyHalogen or LED retrofit
Reflector OptionsAluminum or dichroic (Cold Mirror)

A special feature is the dichroic reflector: it reflects visible light forward and allows some infrared radiation to escape backward. This means the illuminated object is heated less by the light beam – relevant on set for heat-sensitive props or close proximity use. Caution: The heat is thus dissipated backward into the socket.

On-Set Usage

Specific practical tips:

  • Do not confuse/interchange with MR16: MR11 uses GU4 (4 mm), MR16 uses GU5.3 (5.33 mm). The bases are not compatible, and an MR16 will not physically fit into an MR11 socket.
  • Observe voltage: As a 12V lamp, the MR11 requires a suitable low-voltage transformer/driver. For dimmable setups, the combination of lamp and dimmer must match, otherwise it will flicker – particularly critical on set for high-speed/slow-motion shots.
  • Halogen vs. LED: Classic halogen MR11s provide a continuous, warm light characteristic; LED retrofits save power and heat, but the color rendering (CRI/TLCI) and flicker-free operation for the camera should be checked.
  • Reflector choice: Dichroic for less radiant heat on the object, fully mirrored (aluminum) if heat should not be directed backward into the socket.
