200-watt tungsten Fresnel spotlight by Mole-Richardson (Type 2351 "Midget Solarspot"), focusable from spot to flood.

Overview

The Midget (full name "Midget Solarspot", type 2351 by Mole-Richardson) is a compact 200-watt class tungsten Fresnel spotlight. The name belongs to the traditional Mole-Richardson nomenclature where small tungsten units carry nicknames; in the same power class, the closely related Inbetweenie (type 3101/3111) is often offered interchangeably with the Midget by rental houses.

Like all Fresnel spotlights, the Midget can be continuously focused from spot to flood via a rotating adjustment and delivers a uniform, easily controllable light field. As a tungsten light source, it operates with the typical color temperature of approximately 3200 K for incandescent light.

On-Set Use

Due to its low weight and small form factor, the Midget is suitable for tight setups where larger Fresnels wouldn't fit. Typical applications:

  • Accent and effect lighting (edge light, hair light, eyelight)
  • Small-area key or backlight in close-ups and tabletop setups
  • Precise illumination of individual image areas thanks to the narrow spot angle

The focusable beam allows for precise light shaping and further modification with barndoors. As a tungsten unit, the Midget is color-matched to incandescent sources without correction gels; for daylight mixing, CTB conversion gel is used.
