The unit weighs 41 kg without the burner and operates with electronic ballasts (EVG) that ensure flicker-free operation at all frame rates. Als DoP schätze ich am ARRIMAX die brutale Lichtleistung, die mir erlaubt, selbst bei gleißendem Sonnenlicht noch Schatten aufzuhellen oder Gegenlicht zu setzen. Das kontinuierliche Focusing von Spot bis Flood gibt mir präzise Kontrolle über die Lichtverteilung, ohne dass ich Zubehör wechseln muss. Der einzige Nachteil ist das Gewicht – bei 41 kg brauche ich immer einen stabilen Lift oder Kran.
Mit ARRIMAX kann ich die Tageszeit dramaturgisch manipulieren und beispielsweise nachmittags noch eine Morgenstimmung kreieren, indem ich hartes Seitenlicht setze. Die hohe Lichtleistung ermöglicht es mir, auch bei Weitwinkelaufnahmen die komplette Szenerie gleichmäßig auszuleuchten. Besonders wertvoll ist die Möglichkeit, bei Actionszenen im Freien die Gesichter der Schauspieler herauszuarbeiten, ohne dass es künstlich wirkt.
Ein ARRIMAX 18/12 kostet in der Miete etwa 180 Euro pro Tag, dazu kommen 60 Euro für das Vorschaltgerät und mindestens 200 Euro für einen geeigneten Lift. Der Stromverbrauch von 18 kW erfordert einen Generator oder Starkstromanschluss, was die Standortauswahl einschränkt. Dafür ersetzt eine ARRIMAX-Einheit oft drei bis vier kleinere Scheinwerfer und spart dadurch Personalkosten für Beleuchter.
