Tungsten spotting unit with six individually switchable PAR64 lamps (6,000 W total / 3200 K), Maxi-Brute class fixture for broad-area illumination.
The 6-Light Maxi (also known as "Maxi Brute Six-Light", "6-Light Maxi Brute", or "Six-Light Molepar") is a tungsten open-face fixture from the Maxi Brute family. It houses six PAR64 sealed-beam lamps in a single housing, each with its own reflector. Each lamp can be individually switched on or off via its own toggle switch, allowing the total output to be controlled in stages.
The "6-Light" designation refers to the configuration of six PAR lamps and distinguishes this variant from larger Brutes (e.g., Nine-Light/9,000 W) as well as smaller Mini-Brutes/FAY heads (PAR36). A characteristic feature is the bundling of multiple hard individual beams into a powerful, directional light source.
The following values refer to a standard tungsten version (Cinelight Maxi Brute Six-Light). Dimensions, connectors, and bases vary by manufacturer.
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Configuration | 6 × PAR64 |
| Wattage per lamp | 1,000 W |
| Total wattage | 6,000 W (6 kW), stepped 1,000–6,000 W |
| Color Temperature (Tungsten) | 3200 K |
| Lamp base | GX16d |
| Control | 6 individual toggle switches (per lamp) |
| Head dimensions (approx.) | 98 × 62 × 24 cm |
| Weight (approx.) | 15–16 kg |
| Power supply | e.g., CEE 32 A or 6-circuit Socapex (manufacturer dependent) |
The light output is not focused via a lens or mirror, but rather determined by the choice of PAR64 globe. Common beam types include:
Standard are tungsten globes with 3200 K. For daylight applications, dichroic FAY globes (approx. 5000 K) were formerly used; these are now considered expensive and short-lived and have largely been replaced by HMI and LED solutions.
The 6-Light Maxi delivers a lot of "punch" for a relatively low purchase and rental cost and is primarily used for large-area tasks:
Since the six lamps can be switched individually, the brightness level can be roughly adjusted without dimmers and thus matched to other light sources. At greater subject distances, the multiple individual shadows can blend more softly. However, the light fundamentally remains hard; for soft light, the head is typically used with diffusion (frost, fabric) or as a bounce.
From a DoP's perspective, this element is essential for the visual design. It allows me to consistently implement the desired color mood and aesthetic image.
This professional solution increases production efficiency and reduces post-production requirements. It allows for flexible, rapid adjustments during the shoot.
As a gaffer, this is an indispensable tool in my daily kit. It allows me professional light control and quick adjustments on set, which saves time and ensures quality.
