Tungsten cluster fixture of nine PAR-64 lamps (1000 W each, 9000 W total, 3200 K); Mole-Richardson's 9-Light Maxi Brute.

Overview

The 9-Light Maxi is a tungsten cluster fixture (multi-lamp unit) consisting of nine individual PAR-64 lamps arranged in a block within a common housing. The design is primarily known as the Mole-Richardson 9-Light Maxi Brute (Mole-Richardson designation "Nine-Light Molepar", Type 5771); "Maxi Brute" is the generic term originally coined by Berkey Colortran, now used generically for PAR-64 clusters.

Each of the nine lamps can be switched on or off individually via its own toggle switch, allowing for brightness control in coarse steps and shaping of the light field. The lamp modules are mounted on swivels, enabling the individual beams to be fanned out or concentrated.

Technical Data

FeatureValue
Lamp TypePAR-64 (Tungsten, sealed reflector lamp)
Number of Lamps9
Wattage per Lamp1000 W
Total Wattage9000 W
Color Temperature3200 K (Tungsten)
Switching9 toggle switches (one per lamp)
Beam Characteristicsdependent on PAR-64 configuration: Wide, Medium, Narrow Spot, Very Narrow Spot
Weight (Mole-Richardson)approx. 74 lbs / approx. 21 kg
Dimensions (Mole-Richardson)approx. 31.5 × 31 × 7 in

Since PAR-64 lamps are available in various beam angles (from very narrow to wide), the light cone can be precisely adjusted through lamp selection and the swivel modules.

Set Usage

The 9-Light Maxi is primarily used as a powerful, directed light source for large areas: as a backlight, for fill and de-contrast of wide set areas, or as a hard artificial sunlight through windows. Due to its high luminous flux at a comparatively low cost, it is considered a "punch for little money."

  • Mounting: hanging, on a grid/pipe, or on a combo/senior stand.
  • The nine separate switches allow for coarse brightness gradation without dimmers.
  • Front diffusion (e.g., frost) merges the nine individual beams into a softer source, but reduces its throw and control.

Distinction

Not to be confused with the 9-Light Mini Brute / Molefay (FAY cluster): This uses smaller PAR-36 lamps with lower wattage per lamp and is often equipped with dichroic FAY lamps (daylight ~5000 K). The Maxi Brute operates with the larger, more powerful PAR-64 lamps.
