Overview
The 6x6 Frame is a square grip frame with an edge length of 6 feet (approx. 1.83 m), onto which light-shaping cloths (so-called "rags") are stretched. It belongs to the family of overhead or butterfly frames and is one of the most common sizes on set. The measurement refers to the frame; the corresponding cloths are custom-made to fit. Unlike a finished light source, the 6x6 is a grip tool: it holds the cloth, which, depending on the material, diffuses, dampens, blocks, or reflects the light.
The terms Butterfly (usually placed vertically/sideways between the lamp and the subject) and Overhead (hung horizontally above the subject) refer to the same construction in different orientations.
Construction
The frame typically consists of round steel or aluminum tubing. "Break-a-part" versions with detachable corners or divisible tubes are common to keep the 6x6 portable. The frame is inserted into a grip head on a stand via a 5/8-inch baby pin; on set, it is secured with sandbags against tipping and wind. The cloth is tied and stretched around the tube with ties.
The 6x6 is part of a tiered range of common overhead/butterfly frames:
| Size (Feet) | Approx. Metric |
|---|
| 4x4 | ≈ 1.22 × 1.22 m |
| 6x6 | ≈ 1.83 × 1.83 m |
| 8x8 | ≈ 2.44 × 2.44 m |
| 12x12 | ≈ 3.66 × 3.66 m |
| 12x20 | ≈ 3.66 × 6.10 m |
| 20x20 | ≈ 6.10 × 6.10 m |
Cloths and Function
The same 6x6 frame performs different tasks depending on the cloth stretched on it. Basic principle: Scrims/Nets reduce the amount of light, Silks diffuse the light, Solids block it completely (negative fill), Bounces reflect it. Common cloths, ordered from least to most impactful:
- Diffusion/Scrim: Half Soft Frost, Hilight, Single, Double, 1/4 Grid, 1/2 Grid, Full Grid, Full Silk, Magic Cloth
- Bounce: Ultrabounce, Silver, Gold, Silver/Gold Checker, bleached/unbleached Muslin
- Solid/Backdrop: Solid (black), as well as Greenscreen/Bluescreen and Gray/Blue Backdrops
On-Set Use
The 6x6 is the compact standard for light control indoors and on location shoots. Placed in front of a hard source (sun or spotlight), a Silk or Gridcloth creates soft, broad light; a Solid provides shadow or negative fill for shaping; a Bounce serves as a fill light. Due to its manageable size, the 6x6 can be set up by a few people and operated on a C-stand or Combo stand – an advantage over the large 12x12 or 20x20 overheads, which require heavy stands and more crew.
