DMG MAXI

color temperature flow roll take

LED panel by Digital Sputnik with 576 bi-color LEDs, 600W, CRI >96, 30×30cm—versatile for interviews and documentary lighting.

Technical Details

The DMG MAXI utilizes 576 individual LEDs (288 daylight LEDs and 288 tungsten LEDs) and achieves a CRI value of over 96. The unit measures 30 x 30 x 8 cm with a weight of 3.2 kg and can be powered by V-mount batteries or an AC adapter. Power consumption is a maximum of 600W at full output for both LED groups. The DMG series also includes the smaller models DMG MINI (150W) and DMG SL1 (60W), which offer the same color mixing principle in more compact housings.

History & Development

Digital Sputnik introduced the first DMG generation in 2016 as a response to the limited color temperature options available in LED panels at the time. The DMG MAXI followed in 2017 as the flagship of the series and quickly established itself in documentary production and the corporate sector. In 2020, a hardware update was released with improved color rendering and higher light output. The current Generation III from 2022 additionally offers app control and extended dimming curves.

Practical Application in Film

The DMG MAXI is particularly suitable for interview setups where quick adjustments to changing lighting conditions are required. In documentaries like "The Cave" (2019), DMG panels were used for flexible illumination in unpredictable environments. The panel functions as a key light for close-ups and as a large-area softbox fill with appropriate diffusers. The low heat development allows for longer takes without compromising comfort for the talent.

Comparison & Alternatives

Direct competitors include the Litepanels Gemini 2x1 (435W) and the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C, with the latter operating with RGB color mixing instead of bi-color. The DMG MAXI is priced between consumer panels like the Godox LD150R and high-end solutions like ARRI products. For mobile productions, it offers the best balance of light output, color quality, and portability, while for studio applications, larger SkyPanel variants are often preferred.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
