5/8" pin (Baby pin): standard 16mm mounting stud for lights and grip equipment that inserts into a Baby receiver.
The 5/8" Pin – commonly referred to in set jargon as Baby Pin, “Baby Spud," or “Baby Spigot" – is the standardized mounting pin (spigot) used to mechanically attach lights and grip accessories to stands, clamps, and arms. The pin is inserted into a matching receptacle, known as a Baby Receiver, and secured there with a locking screw.
The 5/8" Pin, along with the larger 1-1/8" Junior Pin, forms the backbone of mechanical interfaces on a film set. The standardization of these two sizes ensures that equipment from different manufacturers is compatible and that the lighting and grip departments can use the same hardware.
Dimensions:
| Standard | Designation | Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 5/8" | Baby Pin / Baby Spigot | ≈ 16 mm (15.875 mm) |
| 1-1/8" | Junior Pin | ≈ 28 mm |
Adapters, plates, and extensions with a Baby Pin typically feature the standard photographic threads 1/4"-20 and 3/8", used for mounting cameras, monitors, or accessories.
The Baby Pin is the interface for a wide range of equipment: small to medium lights, clamps (Convi/Cardellini type), grip heads, C-stand arms, monitor mounts, baby plates, and stand extensions. Equipment with a Baby Receiver is placed directly onto the pin; Baby-to-Junior adapters allow for switching between the two receiver sizes.
Due to its ubiquity, the 5/8" Pin is a fundamental component of any grip and lighting department and is found in countless variations – as a simple snap-in pin, double-headed, with a pipe clamp, or as part of an extension.
