Overview
The 5-in-1 Reflector is a collapsible round (occasionally oval-shaped) reflector set for light shaping on set and during available light shoots. It is not a device from a single manufacturer but a standardized design offered almost identically by numerous brands (including NEEWER, K&F Concept, Fotodiox, Westcott, Godox).
The core of the system is a translucent diffuser disc on a flexible spring steel frame. A reversible, removable cover is pulled over this disc, providing four additional surfaces – silver, gold, white, and black. Thus, a single, compactly foldable element covers five typical lighting tasks: fill, warming, soft fill, negative fill, and diffusion.
The Five Surfaces
| Surface | Function on Set |
|---|
| Silver | Strong fill, increases contrast and brilliance without altering light color |
| Gold | Warm fill, gives skin tones and sunlight a warmer hue |
| White | Soft, neutral fill with lower intensity |
| Black | Negative Fill / Flag: absorbs light, deepens shadows, and shapes the subject |
| Translucent (Diffuser) | Held between the light source and the subject to soften harsh (sun)light |
Design and Sizes
The spring steel frame can be folded to a fraction of its diameter and transported in an included bag. Common round diameters range from mini formats around 30 cm (12") to 56/60 cm and 80 cm, up to 110 cm (43") and 120 cm; beyond this size, individual manufacturers offer rectangular panels instead of round discs (e.g., Godox 120×180 cm or 150×200 cm). Rule of thumb: the larger the surface area, the softer and more widespread the reflected or diffused light.
On-Set Use
In practice, the reflector is either held by a crew member or secured to a C-stand with a reflector clamp (Reflector Holder). Small and lightweight, it is a standard tool for outdoor shoots, interviews, and ENG/documentary work where full lighting setups would be too complex. The translucent disc serves as an improvised diffuser for sun or lamps, and the black side as a compact negative fill element. Due to its large surface area, the disc is highly susceptible to wind and should be secured outdoors.
