2x2 Panel: LED soft light fixture approximately 2 × 2 feet (61 × 61 cm), used as a key or fill light source on film sets.

Overview

On a film set, a "2x2 Panel" refers to a flat LED light source (Soft Panel or LED Mat) in the size class of approximately 2 x 2 feet, or about 61 x 61 cm. The numbers do not refer to a wattage rating or a lamp code, but to the dimensions of the luminous surface in feet. "2x2" is thus part of a series of common panel sizes such as 1x1 (approx. 30 x 30 cm), 1x2, and 2x1 – the larger the surface, the softer and more expansive the light.

It is therefore a device or size category, not a single product from a specific manufacturer. Various manufacturers offer devices in this class; the best-known example of a true square 2x2 panel is the Westcott Flex Cine 2'x2' LED Mat, which is often mentioned due to its flexible, thin design.

Design and Operating Principle

A 2x2 Panel distributes many LEDs evenly over a relatively large surface. This flatness is the actual purpose: a large light source casts soft, flowing shadows and is well-suited as flattering facial or fill light. Typically, panels of this class are also combined with diffusion fabric, a softbox, or a grid for light control.

In the case of flexible LED mats of this size, the luminous surface is only a few millimeters thin, lightweight, and partially bendable, allowing it to be mounted on curved surfaces or in tight set conditions. Rigid panels, on the other hand, are usually attached to a stand via a yoke.

Technical Specifications (Example: Westcott Flex Cine 2'x2' Daylight)

The manufacturer's specifications for the Westcott Flex Cine 2'x2' Daylight LED Mat serve as a concrete example for the 2x2 class:

FeatureValue
Luminous Surface2 x 2 feet (approx. 61 x 61 cm)
Height / Thicknessapprox. 6 mm (1/4 inch)
Weightunder 0.5 kg (under 1 lb)
Power Consumptionapprox. 200 W
Color Temperaturedaylight white (manufacturer specification 5600 K)
Color RenderingCRI 95
LED Count256 LEDs
Dimming0–100%, flicker-free

These values apply to this specific model. Other 2x2 panels vary in power, color temperature (often also bicolor or RGBWW), and design.

Use on Set

2x2 Panels are primarily used as soft key or fill light for interviews, faces, and general illumination. The larger surface area compared to a 1x1 panel provides softer light while remaining maneuverable enough for mobile setups. Flexible mats of this size are popular in EFP, documentary, and commercial production because they take up little space in transport and can be attached in unusual positions.
