1x2 panel: rectangular LED soft light measuring approximately 1 × 2 feet; also called 2x1 regardless of manufacturer.

Overview

The term "1x2 Panel" does not refer to a specific manufacturer or device, but rather to a form factor within the LED soft light family: a rectangular flat panel light with a luminous surface area of approximately one foot by two feet (approx. 30 x 60 cm). The numbers indicate the dimensions of the light-emitting surface in feet. Depending on the manufacturer, the same form factor may also be written as "2x1" – both notations refer to the same class of device, simply indicating portrait or landscape orientation.

1x2 Panels are powerful yet compact soft lights for medium distances. They fall in size between the smaller 1x1 Panels and the large 2x2 or 4x4 flat lights, and are frequently used as key, fill, or eye lights in interview, documentary, and studio setups.

Typical Design

Devices of this form factor generally share the following characteristics:

  • Diffused Soft Light: A diffusion panel in front of the LED matrix creates a soft, large-area light source with a gentle shadow fall-off.
  • Color Control: Many models are bi-color (variable color temperature) or fully RGBW/RGBWW with additional saturation and HSI control, as well as gel libraries.
  • Control: Operation via onboard controller, DMX (wired or wireless), Bluetooth, or app.
  • Mounting: Yoke with baby (5/8") and often junior pin; many versions can optionally be powered by V-mount or Gold-mount batteries.

Example Fixtures and Specifications

The following market-standard 1x2 / 2x1 Panels illustrate the typical range. The values are taken from the respective model's manufacturer specifications and do not apply universally to all devices of this form factor.

Set Application

Due to their large, soft emitting surface, 1x2 Panels are well-suited as flattering facial lighting, broad fill light, or for evenly illuminating backgrounds. The landscape orientation allows for the creation of a wide light edge, while the portrait orientation is suitable for standing individuals. Eggcrates/honeycombs can be used to control the light beam, and integrated gel and effect libraries allow for creating looks without physical gels. Battery-powered versions are popular for mobile ENG, documentary, and event productions.
