RGBWW LED panel by Nanlite with app control — delivers full-color and effects lighting for creative setups.

Technical Details

The MixPanel 60 features 576 LED chips (144 per color RGBW plus 144 additional warm white LEDs) and achieves a CRI of ≥95 and a TLCI of ≥97. The color temperature can be adjusted in 100K increments, and the brightness in 1% steps from 0-100%. The anodized aluminum housing weighs 1.8kg and offers DMX512 control and app control via Bluetooth. Nanlite also produces the larger MixPanel 150 (150W, 60x30cm) and the more compact MixPanel 20 (20W, 20x20cm).

History & Development

Nanlite introduced the MixPanel series in 2021 as a direct response to ARRI SkyPanels and Aputure Nova. The Chinese company, founded in 2013, initially positioned itself in the consumer sector and began developing professional film lights more intensively from 2019 onwards. The MixPanel 60 was Nanlite's first RGBWW panel and established the brand in the field of color-variable LED panel lights. A revised version with improved color rendering and a more stable Bluetooth connection followed in 2022.

Practical Use in Film

Gaffers primarily use the MixPanel 60 as practical background lighting or for subtle color accents indoors. In dialogue scenes, the broad light characteristic allows for soft shadows without complex diffusion. The compact design is suitable for hidden mounting behind props or in tight shooting locations. Productions like "The Mandalorian" Season 3 used larger MixPanel variants for LED volume extensions. The main disadvantage lies in its limited light output for larger setups – in daylight scenes, the luminosity is usually only sufficient for accent lighting.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C, the MixPanel 60 offers similar functions at a third of the price, but with a less robust housing and slightly poorer color rendering. The Aputure Nova P300c competes with double the light output but costs accordingly more. For budget productions, Godox RGB panels are an alternative, but they do not achieve the color accuracy of the Nanlite series. Studios typically choose MixPanels for run-and-gun shoots or as a cost-effective addition to high-end equipment.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
