Flat LED panel light in standard 1×1 format (approx. 30×30 cm emitting surface), used as soft, portable work light in film and TV production.

Overview

A "1x1 Panel" (pronounced "one-by-one") refers to a whole class of flat LED panel lights, not a specific manufacturer or ANSI lamp code. The name derives from its form factor: the light-emitting surface is roughly one square foot (approximately 30 x 30 cm), with the housing including the frame and connectors measuring around 41 x 45 cm. The manufacturer Litepanels established this format with its early LED panels, and it became the de facto standard, leading numerous brands to offer compatible "1x1" lights today.

The 1x1 Panel inherently provides relatively soft, directed light and is considered a versatile, lightweight workhorse for interviews, ENG/EFP, broadcast, and set lighting. It can be further softened using attachable diffusers or softboxes (e.g., DoPchoice Snapbag, Chimera).

Construction and Variants

1x1 Panels are built in three color temperature concepts:

  • Daylight: fixed daylight color temperature, usually the brightest variant in a series.
  • Bi-Color: continuously adjustable between warm and daylight.
  • RGB(WW): full-color models with additional saturation and effect control.

Additionally, there are "Soft" versions with an integrated diffuser for particularly soft light. Control is local on the housing, via DMX (XLR5/RJ45), or wireless, depending on the model. Operation is via AC adapter or common camera batteries (V-Mount / Gold-Mount). Well-known examples include the Litepanels Astra and Gemini series, as well as 1x1 panels from brands like Luxli and Socanland.

Technical Specifications (Reference Example)

Specific values depend on the model. Representatively, here are the documented data for a common professional 1x1, the Litepanels Astra 6X Bi-Color:

ParameterValue
Power Consumption105 W
Color Temperature (Bi-Color)Adjustable 3,200–5,600 K
Color RenderingCRI 97 / TLCI 98
Dimensions (Housing)413 x 450 x 134 mm
Weightapprox. 3.2 kg

The less powerful 3X models in the same series consume around 55 W. Wider color temperature ranges (e.g., 2,700–10,000 K) are achieved by RGBWW models like the Gemini series, not the Bi-Color Astra. These figures apply only to the specified example and are not transferable to other 1x1 fixtures.

Set Application

Due to their low weight (usually under 5 kg) and flat design, 1x1 panels are classic travel and run-and-gun lights. They can be mounted on booms, stands, walls, or with Magic Arms and are often supplied in kits with diffusers, grids (Egg Crates), and softboxes. Typical uses include key light for interviews (with a softbox), fill light, soft background, or area lighting.
