2,000-watt film light, typically a tungsten fresnel with 3200 K color temperature.

Overview

"2K" is the common shorthand on set for a fixture with a 2000-watt (2 kilowatt) power consumption. Classically, the term refers to a tungsten Fresnel spotlight with an incandescent filament bulb and a color temperature of 3200 K. In a broader sense, "2K" is also used generically for any fixture head in this wattage class, such as open-face heads or LED and HMI equivalents advertised as "2K equivalent."

The 2K Fresnel is a workhorse fixture: powerful enough for a key light at medium distance, yet still manageable enough to be handled by one person on a stand. Manufacturers like ARRI, Mole-Richardson, and many others offer 2K Fresnels in their tungsten product lines.

Naming: the "Junior"

In the nomenclature coined by Mole-Richardson and now used throughout the industry, the 2K Fresnel bears the nickname Junior. The family designations categorize tungsten Fresnels by wattage:

NicknameWattage
Baby1000 W (1K)
Junior2000 W (2K)
Senior5000 W (5K)
Tener (also "Tenner")10000 W (10K)

The official Mole-Richardson spelling is Tener (e.g., "Baby Tener Solarspot" or "Tener Solarspot"); "Tenner" is a common colloquial spelling. This means a simple call on set like "Junior" or "2K" is sufficient to clearly communicate size and power class.

Technical Specifications

The following values apply to typical tungsten 2K Fresnels; specific dimensions and connectors vary depending on the manufacturer and design (Junior vs. Studio housing).

  • Wattage: 2000 W
  • Color Temperature: 3200 K (Tungsten/Artificial Light)
  • Beam Characteristic: Focusable from spot to flood via the Fresnel lens
  • Fresnel Lens: Approximately 175 mm diameter for the ARRI T2; larger "studio" designs use correspondingly larger lenses
  • Lamp: 2000 W incandescent bulb with a large base (a G38 socket for the ARRI T2; depending on the market, for example, the 2000W CYX lamp for 120 V or the FKK lamp for 230 V)

Set Usage

The 2K Fresnel is used as a powerful key or backlight, for instance, when a 1K (Baby) is too weak, but the effort of a 5K (Senior) is not necessary. The beam angle can be continuously adjusted from a hard spot to a soft flood using the lens; further shaping and filtering of the light is achieved with barndoors, diffusion material, and gels.

As tungsten lamps generate a lot of heat, 2K Fresnels are relatively hot during operation; ARRI, for example, uses a cross-cooling system to reduce heat. The power draw of a 2000W head must be considered in the lighting plot and for the power distribution (distro), as multiple 2Ks can quickly reach the load limit of a circuit.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer

As a cinematographer, I appreciate 2K as a solid working base for many projects, especially when the budget is tight. The resolution offers enough detail for cinema projection and requires less storage space than 4K footage. During shooting, I take into account that 2K takes offer less room for cropping in post.

Director

For me as a director, 2K remains a practical standard that doesn't limit the creative vision. The resolution is perfectly sufficient for telling emotional stories and captivating the audience. More important to me than the sheer pixel count are aspects like color depth, dynamic range, and the craftsmanship of the shots.

Producer

From a producer's perspective, 2K offers significant cost advantages over higher resolutions. The demands on storage, processing power, and transmission technology are more moderate, which positively impacts the budget. At the same time, 2K meets the technical standards of most cinemas and distributors worldwide.
