Overview

A 2-Way Barn Door (also known as a “2-Leaf Barndoor”) is a light shaping accessory for film lights. It consists of a round or square frame with two opposing, individually adjustable leaves (also called doors) that can be folded in front of the light source's aperture. Unlike the more common 4-Way or 4-Leaf variant with four leaves, the 2-Way version limits the light along only one axis (two sides).

The term does not refer to a standalone light source or an ANSI lamp code, but rather a passive grip/lighting accessory. The leaves themselves are not illuminated; they merely block and cut off the light produced by the fixture.

Construction and Function

The Barn Door is inserted into the accessory holder at the front of the light fixture – the same mount that holds filter frames, scrims, or snoots. The two leaves allow for precise light control:

  • Spill Control: Prevents light from falling on areas of the image where it is not desired (e.g., set walls, camera lens).
  • Beam Shaping: Narrows the beam of light on two sides, thereby creating sharp light/shadow edges.
  • Rotating Frame: Many models have a round, rotatable frame, allowing the limiting axis to be oriented horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Since only two leaves are used, the 2-Way version is lighter, more compact, and quicker to handle than 4-Way or 8-Leaf variants – but offers less control over beam shaping.

On-Set Usage

2-Way Barn Doors are available as model-specific accessories for certain lights and are purchased to match the front diameter of the respective fixture. Examples from professional use include Mole-Richardson 2-Way/2-Leaf sets (for Junior Solarspot and Mini-Mole, among others) as well as Flex/Flexdoor systems with two fabric leaves for soft lights like ARRI SkyPanel or Westcott Flex.

Typical applications include cutting off light from the top/bottom or sides, for example, to avoid lens flare, separate a background from the foreground, or create a hard edge of light. Barn Doors are often combined with other tools such as flags, gobos, or diffusion gels.
