4-Way Barn Door

Four-blade barn door attachment for studio lights that controls light spill and shapes the beam by adjusting individual flaps.

Overview

A 4-way barn door is not a light source itself nor a lamp code, but an accessory light modifier attached to the front of a fixture. It consists of a frame with four hinged leaves, one each for the top, bottom, left, and right. Each leaf can be independently swung open or closed to trim the exiting beam of light on one or more edges.

The 4-way variant is the standard configuration on most professional spotlights. This should be distinguished from the 8-leaf barn door, which distributes eight leaves instead of four across the frame. How these eight leaves are arranged depends on the model: in some designs, only the side leaves are additionally divided, while in others, extendable extensions are added to the four main leaves. Common to all 8-leaf designs is that they allow for finer and also diagonal trims, as well as more precise spill control.

Construction and Operation

  • Four Leaves: top, bottom, left, right; each adjustable individually, from fully open to fully closed.
  • Rotating Frame: The entire barn door can be rotated in its holder, allowing the leaves to be aligned for horizontal, vertical, or angled light edges.
  • Mounting: It is inserted into the accessory holder (front slot) of the fixture and usually secured with a lock.
  • Material: On tungsten spotlights, the leaves and frame are made of metal as they are exposed to high temperatures. Many modern LED lights, however, use leaves with a velvet or fabric covering that absorbs stray light particularly well.

Use on Set

The barn door serves two main purposes: beam shaping and spill control. By adjusting the leaves, light is prevented from falling on unwanted surfaces such as walls, the floor, or into the lens. A single, widely swung-out leaf also acts as a hard shield against lens flare.

It sits directly on the fixture and is therefore quick and convenient to adjust, but it does not provide as clean, hard a shadow edge as a separate cutter or a flag on a C-stand. For soft light edges, the leaves are angled slightly (feathering), while for clearly defined edges, one works with grip equipment at a distance from the light source instead.

Barn doors are standard equipment for Fresnel spotlights, open-face lights, and many LED fixtures, provided they have a suitable front slot.
