8-Leaf Barn Door

Eight-leaf barn door attachment for Fresnel lights with eight flaps instead of four, enabling precise beam control and sealed corner gaps.

Overview

An 8-Leaf Barn Door (German: Achtflügel-Torblende or Achtfach-Torklappe) is a light shaping attachment that is inserted into the accessory holder at the front of a Fresnel spotlight. Unlike the classic four-leaf barn door, it has eight leaves that trim, shade, and shape the light beam. It belongs to the category of light shapers/shading and is neither an independent light source nor a color correction tool.

The basic principle: The more leaves a barn door has and the longer they are, the more precisely the beam of light can be controlled. In many designs, four large main leaves are supplemented by four smaller auxiliary leaves ("Helper Flags"), which can be individually swung in and out. This allows the diagonal corner gaps, which remain open in a simple four-leaf barn door, to be closed.

Construction and Function

  • Eight Leaves: typically four main and four smaller auxiliary leaves, each individually adjustable.
  • Closing Corner Gaps: the additional leaves cover the corner gaps that allow stray light to pass through in four-leaf barn doors.
  • Rotation: many 8-leaf barn doors can be rotated in their holder, allowing the cut edges to be freely oriented within the frame.
  • Material: usually black powder-coated metal (aluminum or steel), often with a safety cable to the spotlight.
  • Model-Specific: Barn doors are matched to a specific spotlight or front opening (e.g., 6", 7", 8", or 10" Fresnel) and are not universally interchangeable.

Manufacturers and Examples

8-leaf barn doors are offered by numerous manufacturers, each matching their Fresnel heads, including:

  • ARRI (for 650W Fresnel and the LED Fresnel series, among others)
  • Aputure (F10 Barn Doors for the 10-inch LED Fresnel F10, with four main and four auxiliary leaves, Bowens mount)
  • Strand Lighting / Selecon (for 6" and 8" Fresnels and the Rama series)
  • Litepanels (for Studio-X3 LED Fresnel)
  • Rayzr, Godox (for their respective LED Fresnel heads)

Use on Set

On set, the 8-leaf barn door is used to precisely keep light away from walls, backgrounds, the camera, or adjacent light sources, thus avoiding spill light. The finer division of leaves allows the light field to be limited more narrowly and with more defined contours than with a four-leaf barn door, which aids in creating sculpted lighting and cleanly separating the subject from the background. The leaves can also be used to hold gels (diffusion, conversion) or small flags.
