Nanlite Forza 500: 500W LED spot delivering 76,000 lux — high-end fixture for large sets and exterior shoots.
Technical Details
The light source is based on COB (Chip-on-Board) LED technology with a 120mm reflector and Bowens mount for light modifiers. Power consumption is a maximum of 600 watts when connected to mains power; alternatively, it can be powered by two V-mount batteries. The unit weighs 4.2 kg and measures 320×290×460mm. Light output can be continuously dimmed from 10-100%, with the color temperature remaining constant at 5600K±200K. An integrated fan provides cooling, with a noise level below 30dB at a distance of one meter.
History & Development
Nanlite introduced the Forza series in 2019 in response to the growing demand for affordable, high-output LED continuous lights. The Chinese company, founded in 2010, initially established itself in the consumer market and began expanding into the professional market from 2018. The Forza 500 was positioned in 2020 as a mid-range option between the Forza 300 and Forza 720. Technical improvements in 2021 included optimized heat dissipation and expanded DMX compatibility.
Practical Use in Film
The Forza 500 is suitable as a key light for interviews and smaller setups, as well as a fill light in larger productions. Its compact design makes it ideal for location shoots in confined spaces or for gimbal setups where traditional HMI lights would be too heavy. The constant color temperature simplifies color grading in post-production. The Bowens mount allows the use of standard softboxes, Fresnel lenses, and reflectors. For outdoor shooting, it serves as an effective daylight supplement without the need for conversion filters.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the Aputure 300d II, the Forza 500 offers higher light output at a similar price, but without integrated effects or app control. HMI alternatives like the ARRI M18 achieve higher light output but require ballasts and have longer warm-up times. The Godox VL300 costs less but only achieves a CRI of 95 and lower light output. For higher demands, the Forza 720 with 720 watts is an option, while the Forza 300 is sufficient for smaller productions.
