Motion capture technology specifically recording detailed facial expressions and movements.

Definition

Facial Capture (Face Mocap) records the subtle movements of facial muscles to animate photorealistic digital characters. Hundreds of markers or markerless systems capture every nuance of the performance.

Practical Application

"Avatar", "Planet of the Apes", "The Mandalorian" - all utilize Facial Capture for emotional digital characters. Andy Serkis' Gollum/Caesar established the technology as an art form.

Technical Details

Marker-based: 100-200 points on the face. Markerless: Machine learning analyzes video. Head-Mounted Cameras (HMC) isolate facial movement from the body. FACS (Facial Action Coding System) classifies expressions.
