Exposure monitoring tool displaying brightness levels as distinct colors for precise exposure control.

Definition

False Color is a monitoring mode that displays different brightness ranges of the image in different colors. This allows for precise exposure control without a waveform monitor.

Practical Application

Indispensable on set for quick exposure checks: Red = overexposure, Green = optimal for skin tones, Blue = underexposure. Each monitor manufacturer has its own color schemes.

Technical Details

Typical assignment: <2% black, 2-20% blue, 20-60% green/yellow (midtones), 60-90% orange, >90% red (clipping). IRE values are assigned colors. Skin tones should be in the 70-80 IRE range.
