VFX technique replacing one actor's face with another through digital compositing and tracking.

Definition

Face Replacement enables the seamless replacement of one face with another – for stunt doubles, scheduling conflicts, or posthumous appearances. The technique combines 3D tracking, warping, and compositing.

Practical Application

Standard technique for action films: The star's face is projected onto the stunt double. "Furious 7" used Face Replacement for Paul Walker posthumously. Deepfake technology is increasingly automating the process.

Technical Details

Workflow: Facial Tracking → 3D Geometry Matching → Source Face Projection → Lighting Match → Edge Blending. Machine learning (DeepFaceLab, etc.) significantly speeds up the process.
