Look-Up Table designed for artistic color effects rather than technical conversion.

Definition

Creative LUTs (also known as Look LUTs) are pre-designed color transformations for specific aesthetic effects – in contrast to Technical LUTs, which are used for color space conversion.

Practical Application

Filmmakers use Creative LUTs for consistent looks: Orange & Teal, Vintage Film, Desaturated Blockbuster. They are used on set for previews and in post-production as a starting point for grading. Popular providers: Lutify.me, Color Grading Central, OSIRIS.

Technical Details

Creative LUTs should be applied to neutrally corrected footage. Combining them with Log-to-Rec.709 conversion requires the correct order. LUTs operate on a pixel basis without context – secondary corrections often remain necessary.
