ACEScct extends ACEScc with a 'toe' region in shadows for more natural grading behavior in dark image areas.

Definition

ACEScct (ACES Color Correction with Toe) is an evolution of ACEScc that adds a "toe" – a gentle curve in the shadows. This prevents harsh clipping of very dark values and allows for more natural grading, especially with high-contrast images.

The "Toe" Difference

Shadow Curve Behavior:

_______| ____/

Advantages over ACEScc

  1. Shadow Behavior: No harsh clipping boundaries
  2. Lift Adjustments: Respond more naturally
  3. Low-Key Looks: More easily achievable
  4. Compatibility: Familiar with Cineon/DPX workflows

Practical Application

DaVinci Resolve Setup

  1. Project Settings → Color Management
  2. Color Science: ACEScct
  3. ACES Version: 1.3 (current)
  4. ACES Input Transform: Auto-detect or manual

Typical Workflow

  • Timeline Space: ACEScct
  • Grading: In ACEScct
  • Output: Via ODT to target color space

Recommendation

ACEScct is today the recommended standard for color grading in ACES workflows. Most colorists and post-production houses have switched to ACEScct.
