Olympus lens for MFT with 15 optical elements, ED glass, and 100mm full-frame equivalent. Dual-focus mechanism, 16" minimum focus distance, prized for portraiture with creamy bokeh.

Technical Details

The modern Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 Pro for MFT features 15 lens elements in 10 groups, including two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one HR (High Refractive Index) element to correct chromatic aberrations. The minimum focusing distance is 40cm, and the filter diameter is 72mm. The lens weighs 411g and measures 87mm in length. The Dual-Focus mechanism allows for precise autofocus and manual override. Internal focusing prevents changes in length and filter rotation during focusing.

History & Development

Olympus introduced the first Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 back in 1972 for the OM-1 system, at the time as a compact alternative to the bulky SLR lenses of its competitors. The legendary OM-Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 quickly established itself as a benchmark for sharpness and bokeh quality. With the introduction of the Micro Four Thirds standard in 2008, Olympus redeveloped the Pro series; the current M.Zuiko Digital ED 50mm f/1.4 Pro was released in 2021 as part of the f/1.2 Pro series family.

Practical Use in Film

Cinematographers appreciate the 50mm f/1.4 for portraits with a natural perspective and creamy bokeh at wide apertures. The 100mm full-frame equivalent focal length on MFT cameras like the Panasonic GH series is ideal for medium close-ups without distortion. The quiet autofocus makes it compatible with in-camera audio recording. At f/1.4, it effectively isolates subjects from the background; from f/2.8, it delivers crisp sharpness across the entire frame. Its compact dimensions facilitate gimbal setups and handheld shooting.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2, the Zuiko offers a longer focal length with slightly less light gathering capability but costs significantly less. The Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DN Contemporary for MFT achieves similar optical performance at a lower price but lacks weather sealing and Pro build quality. For full-frame adaptations, it competes with classic 85mm portrait lenses, but offers native MFT optimization and state-of-the-art coatings.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
