Sony's 2013 H.264-based codec for 4K recording: XAVC-I (Intra-Frame, 223–880 Mbit/s), XAVC-L (Long GOP, 50–185 Mbit/s), and XAVC-S (consumer).

Technical Details

XAVC exists in three main variants: XAVC-I (Intra-Frame), XAVC-L (Long GOP), and XAVC-S (for consumer cameras). XAVC-I compresses each frame individually with bitrates from 223 to 880 Mbps for 4K, while XAVC-L uses inter-frame compression and achieves data rates of 50 to 185 Mbps. The codec supports 4:2:2 10-bit color sampling in professional variants, while XAVC-S is limited to 4:2:0 8-bit. Audio recording is done in PCM up to 24-bit/96kHz or as compressed AC-3.

History & Development

Sony introduced XAVC in 2013 as a response to the growing 4K market, after AVCHD reached its limits for higher resolutions. The first implementation was in the Sony PMW-F55 CineAlta camera. In 2014, XAVC-S followed for consumer cameras like the Sony FDR-AX100, while XAVC-I was introduced in 2016 for professional post-production workflows. Since 2018, XAVC has also supported HDR standards like HLG and PQ.

Practical Use in Film

XAVC-I is suitable for color grading-intensive productions, as intra-frame compression allows for precise color correction. Documentarians prefer XAVC-L due to the lower data volume for long takes. Netflix accepts XAVC as a delivery format for 4K content. The codec enables 4:1 proxies for smooth editing in Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro, while the original files remain available for finishing. Multicam synchronization works frame-accurately through the embedded timecode.

Comparison & Alternatives

XAVC offers better file compression than ProRes at comparable quality but requires more processing power for decoding. Compared to DNxHD/DNxHR, XAVC-L achieves similar image quality at lower bitrates. HEVC/H.265 codecs like Sony XAVC-HS achieve 50% smaller files but are more computationally intensive. For pure Sony workflows, XAVC integrates seamlessly, while mixed camera setups often use ProRes or DNx as a common denominator.

Ich nutze XAVC-I bei aufwendigen Beauty-Shots, weil ich in der Post maximale Flexibilität beim Grading brauche - die 10-Bit 4:2:2-Aufzeichnung hält auch extreme Korrekturen aus. Für Dokumentationen wechsle ich zu XAVC-L, da ich bei 12-Stunden-Drehtagen nicht ständig Speicherkarten tauschen will und trotzdem broadcast-taugliche Qualität erhalte.

XAVC-I gibt mir die Sicherheit, dass auch spontane kreative Entscheidungen in der Post umsetzbar sind - wenn ich im Schnitt merke, dass eine Szene wärmer werden soll, kann der Colorist das ohne Qualitätsverlust umsetzen. Die hohe Bildqualität ermöglicht auch digitale Zooms in der Post, was mir mehr Flexibilität bei der Bildgestaltung gibt.

XAVC-L reduziert meine Storage-Kosten um 60% gegenüber XAVC-I bei dokumentarischen Formaten, ohne dass der Sender die Abnahme verweigert. Die nativen Sony-Workflows sparen mir täglich 2-3 Stunden Transcodierung, was bei 30 Drehtagen erhebliche Personalkosten einspart und den Post-Schedule verkürzt.
