Windowpane

Window-shaped gobo or cookie that casts a window frame shadow on a wall or backdrop, simulating light passing through a non-existent window.

Overview

In film lighting, a windowpane (English for "Fensterscheibe") refers to a window-shaped gobo or cookie (Cucoloris), as well as the shadow effect it creates. It is placed between the lamp and the background and projects the silhouette of a window frame – usually a cross of mullions that forms several rectangular light fields – onto a wall, floor, or actor.

The purpose is to create the impression that light is falling into the room through a real window, even though none is present in the set or visible in the frame. This allows an otherwise flatly lit area to be divided into interesting light and shadow fields and suggests a daylight or moonlight mood. The windowpane thus belongs to the same family as other common shadow patterns (doorways, louvers/blinds, foliage, fence pickets) and is a classic stylistic device, particularly known from film noir.

Design and Variants

The windowpane does not exist as a single standardized device with fixed dimensions, but rather as a pattern type in various executions:

  • Cut Cookie/Gobo: The window shape is cut out of opaque material (hardboard, plywood, black showcard, or foamcore) and placed on a stand frame.
  • Improvised Variant: Mullions are stretched across an opening with paper tape or adhesive tape – for example, between two flags or over a foamcore frame. Additional strips can widen the shadow. A related technique involves taping strips directly onto a real window to suggest blinds.
  • Metal Gobo for Ellipsoidals: For a sharply defined window, a metal gobo can be inserted into an ellipsoidal spotlight (Leko), which precisely focuses the pattern onto a surface.

Set Usage

For a convincing result, the general gobo rules apply:

  • Hard Light Source: A hard, directional light (e.g., Fresnel or HMI) creates clearly defined shadow edges. Diffuse light washes out the pattern.
  • Distances Control Sharpness: The greater the distance of the gobo from the background, the larger and softer the shadow; close placement to the background results in sharper edges. The position is aligned with the camera and adjusted until the size and placement of the shadow are correct.
  • Composition: The window shadow is often placed so that the mullion cross is off-center in the frame, with the character standing in one of the light fields.
