Spot lens: a narrow beam angle adjustment on a spotlight that produces a tight, focused light beam with extended throw distance.

Overview

In film and stage lighting, a Spot Lens refers to the narrow, highly focused optical setting of a spotlight – the counterpart to the wide flood setting. A Spot Lens produces a narrow beam of light with high center intensity and long throw distance, intensely illuminating a small area. The term does not describe a single manufacturer's product but rather a function or optical element found in various types of spotlights.

Practically, "spot" occurs in three forms:

  • Interchangeable PAR Lenses: With PAR spotlights, such as the ETC Source Four PAR, the light characteristic is selected via interchangeable diffusion lenses – ranging from Very Narrow Spot (VNSP) and Narrow Spot (NSP) to Medium/Wide Flood.
  • Interchangeable Lens Tubes (Ellipsoidal/Profile): In profile spotlights (Leko/Ellipsoidal), the attached lens tube determines the beam angle; smaller degree numbers result in a narrow spot, while larger degree numbers produce a wide wash.
  • Spot/Flood Focus (Fresnel & Open Lenses): With Fresnel spotlights, the lamp-reflector assembly is moved towards or away from the lens using a knob; the rear end position (lamp far from the lens) provides the narrow spot.

Technical Data

The following field angles are documented as examples for common spotlight systems. The specific values depend on the respective device and model year.

System / LensAbbreviationCharacteristicField Angle
Source Four PARVNSPVery Narrow Spot (round beam)15°
Source Four PARNSPNarrow Spot (round beam)19°

The Source Four PAR values are the field angles specified by ETC; for MFL and WFL, the beam is oval, hence two angles are provided. Depending on the model series (e.g., Source Four PAR EA), the values may vary slightly. For profile spotlights, narrow lens tubes (e.g., 5° or 10°) are typical "spot" optics for long throws; ETC offers some focal lengths (19°, 26°, 36°, 50°) additionally as Enhanced Definition Lens Tubes (EDLT) with higher imaging sharpness for gobos and increased light output.

On-Set Usage

The spot setting is chosen when a small, clearly defined area needs to be emphasized or reached over a long distance – such as a face in a close-up, a narrowly confined accent, a background detail, or a hard, directional effect (classic "Hollywood" look). Because all the light is concentrated on a smaller area, the spot setting is brighter, but also more contrasty and with harder shadow edges than the flood setting.

Advantages and disadvantages at a glance:

  • Spot: high intensity, long throw distance, precise delineation; however, a narrow light pool and harder shadows.
  • Flood: soft, wide-area illumination; however, lower center intensity and shorter range.

With PAR and profile spotlights, the characteristic is set by physically changing the lens or tube, while with Fresnels it is continuously adjusted via the focus knob. Modern LED Fresnels and LED spotlights (e.g., with Bowens or proprietary bayonets) replicate the same spot/flood mechanism using attachable Fresnel or spot attachments.
