Horizontal compression factor of anamorphic lenses — 2x, 1.5x or 1.33x. Higher = stronger anamorphic character.
The Squeeze Ratio indicates how much an anamorphic lens compresses the image horizontally. A 2x squeeze compresses an image twice as wide onto the sensor — in post-production, it is de-squeezed to full width.
The Three Standards
2x Squeeze (Panavision, Hawk, Kowa): Maximum anamorphic look — most oval bokeh, strongest flares, most distortion. 1.5x (Atlas Mercury, DZOFilm Pavo): Good compromise, less distortion at the edges. 1.33x (Sirui, Vazen): Minimal, ideal for 16:9 sensors → 2.39:1 Scope.
