Japanese electronics group and a defining camera maker of digital cinema: the CineAlta line with the Venice as large-format flagship, the E-mount — and sensor supplier to much of the industry.
In the context of filmmaking, Sony is twofold: a camera manufacturer with its own cinema line and the sensor supplier whose chips are found in cameras from many other brands. The cinema line is called CineAlta—under this name, Sony has been building high-end cameras since the dawn of digital cinema production and has been instrumental in the transition from film to digital. Anyone planning a production today encounters Sony on three levels: as the camera on set, as a lens mount ecosystem, and as the sensor inside third-party bodies.
Venice and the CineAlta Line
The flagship is the Venice, a large-format camera with a full-frame sensor that has established itself in high-end production alongside ARRI. Its most famous use is in Top Gun: Maverick, where Venice cameras also flew in the cockpits—made possible by the Rialto system, which allows the sensor block to be detached from the body and mounted remotely via a cable. This makes the Venice interesting for tight installations, rigs, and gimbal work where a complete camera wouldn't fit. Below the Venice, cameras like the FX series and the Burano cater to the segment between documentaries, commercials, and narrative shoots with smaller budgets.
E-Mount and the Sensor Business
The E-mount is Sony's mirrorless mount and runs through its entire system, from still cameras to cinema models. Its short flange distance makes it adapter-friendly: almost any third-party lens can be adapted to the E-mount, but not vice versa—a practical advantage when using vintage or PL optics on a Sony. Less visible, but at least as significant for the industry: Sony manufactures image sensors for a large part of the camera industry. Many cameras bearing other names see through a Sony chip. When discussing sensor technology in camera construction, one almost inevitably talks about Sony.
- Plan Venice usage early with the rental house: Rialto modifications and accessories for detached sensor blocks are not available everywhere.
- Think of the E-mount as an adaptation platform—existing PL or EF lenses do not need to be replaced when switching to a Sony.
