The 2nd AC uses digital slates with timecode synchronization (typically ARRI Hi-5 or Ambient Lockit Slate) at frequencies from 23.976 to 60fps. Their Camera Reports contain precise metadata: Lens Serial Numbers, T-stop values in 1/3 stop increments, ISO settings, and LUT designations. On film productions, they document footage consumption to within 1/8th of a foot (approximately 3mm on 35mm film). Modern 2nd ACs work with iPad-based apps like ScriptE or Silverstack, which automatically generate EDLs (Edit Decision Lists).
History & Development
The position emerged in the 1920s with the professionalization of film production in Hollywood. Originally known as the "Clapper Boy," the job evolved in 1935 with the introduction of multi-channel sound into a systematic continuity manager. In 1970, the IATSE unions introduced standardized training programs. Digitalization from 2005 onwards significantly expanded the scope of responsibilities to include data management and metadata handling.
Practical Application in Film
On "1917" (2019), the 2nd AC coordinated actor marks for complex one-shot sequences over distances of up to 500 meters. During Marvel productions, they work with up to eight cameras running simultaneously and must synchronize their reports in real-time. For Steadicam shots, they place marks with laser distance meters to centimeter accuracy. The 2nd AC changes batteries every 90-120 minutes on RED cameras and every 45 minutes on ARRI ALEXA Mini setups.

The Script Supervisor documents narrative continuity, while the 2nd AC handles technical parameters. While the First Assistant Camera (1st AC) manages focus and camera builds, the 2nd AC concentrates on documentation and set organization. On low-budget productions, the 1st AC often assumes both roles. High-end series employ additional Third Assistant Cameras (3rd AC) for equipment transport and battery management. Digital Imaging Technicians (DITs) have taken over data processing since 2010, with the 2nd AC remaining responsible for initial documentation.
