Vertical lift platform with scissor-jack mechanism; used on set for rigging, positioning lights, cables, and equipment at height.

Overview

A Scissor Lift (German: Scheren-Hubarbeitsbühne) is a mobile work platform whose platform moves purely vertically upwards. It is driven by crisscrossed supports that unfold scissor-like (X-shaped) when lifting – hence the name. This so-called pantograph or scissor mechanism lifts the platform directly above the base, without a lateral boom.

In film and TV production, the Scissor Lift belongs to the category of Aerial Work Platforms and is primarily used by Lighting and Grip departments. It serves to safely elevate crew and equipment – for rigging and adjusting hanging lights, laying cables, or positioning equipment above the set.

Distinction from Boom Lift / Cherry Picker

The Scissor Lift differs fundamentally from a Boom Lift or Cherry Picker (telescopic or articulated boom lift):

  • Direction of Movement: The Scissor Lift lifts exclusively vertically. A Boom Lift can additionally reach sideways, forwards, and over obstacles with a movable arm.
  • Platform: Scissor Lifts typically have a large, wide platform that carries multiple people plus equipment. Boom Lifts usually have a small basket for one to two people.
  • Location of Use: Scissor Lifts are often used for work indoors or on firm, level ground (e.g., in studios and warehouses).

Use on Set

Typical applications on a film set:

  • Rigging, hanging, and readjusting lights on trusses or ceilings.
  • Lifting and holding lamps, diffusion and light frames, as well as equipment at working height.
  • Cable runs and access to hard-to-reach points above the set.
  • Occasionally as a stable, elevated platform for a camera, provided the lift can be hidden out of frame or behind set elements.

Platforms for the film industry are often custom-painted in matte black (referred to by Genie as "Hollywood flat black") to avoid reflections in the image and facilitate digital removal in post-production. Common manufacturers include Genie, JLG, and Skyjack. As operation involves risks of tipping, falling, and crushing, operator instruction and training on set are customary and safety-relevant.
