Rotolight LED ring light with 85 CRI+ LEDs, 3150K–6300K color temperature, 20W power, flash capability. 680g weight, 85h battery runtime, app-controllable.

Technical Details

The NEO operates with 85 CRI+ LEDs and achieves a color temperature between 3150K and 6300K through stepless mixing of the two LED types. The fixture weighs 680g, has a power consumption of 20 watts, and offers eleven flash modes with guide numbers up to 60 at ISO 100. The integrated 6600mAh lithium-ion battery allows for an operating time of up to 85 hours at 10% power or 3.5 hours at full load. A smartphone app controls all parameters via Bluetooth, while the 1/4" thread allows standard mounting on tripods or cameras.

History & Development

Rotolight introduced the NEO in 2015 as an evolution of the original RL48-B, after CEO Rod Aaron Gammons recognized the demand for more compact LED solutions for DSLR productions. In 2017, the NEO 2 followed with improved app control and expanded flash modes. The company has established itself since 2009 as a specialist in ring-shaped LED lights, originally developing the technology for macro photography and evolving it into professional video lights.

Practical Application in Film

Documentary filmmakers often use the NEO as an on-camera light for spontaneous interviews, as it functions as both an eye light and fill light simultaneously. In music videos, the ring arrangement creates characteristic catchlights in the subjects' eyes. The flash function is suitable for hybrid productions requiring both video and stills. Advantages include its compact design, silent operation, and battery life. Disadvantages are its limited light output for larger sets and its pinpoint light distribution without a diffuser.

Comparison & Alternatives

The NEO is positioned between classic LED panels like the Litepanels Astra and ring lights without a flash function. While panels offer more even area illumination, the NEO's ring shape creates specific lighting effects. Modern alternatives include the Rotolight NEO 3 (2021) with a 2000 lux output and the Aputure Amaran Halo for budget-conscious users. Studios are increasingly using larger ring lights like the Rotolight Titan X2, while the NEO plays to its strengths in mobile, one-person productions.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
