Overview
"Rosco Opal" is the common shorthand for Opal Tough Frost, a diffusion gel manufactured by US-based Rosco. It is not a lighting fixture, lamp, or grip hardware, but a light-scattering filter material placed in front of the light source to soften the beam.
Opal Tough Frost is considered one of Rosco's most widely used "hard" diffusers. It falls into the medium diffusion category: the gel noticeably scatters the beam while retaining a discernible bright core (hotspot) and thus the fundamental direction of the beam. Compared to the denser grades in the Frost family (Rosco numbers 100 to 103), Opal Tough Frost is lighter and more transparent.

The same material is offered in two Rosco product lines, leading to different designations:

Note for differentiation: "Light Opal Tough Frost" (#3020) is a *weaker* diffuser than the Opal Tough Frost described here (#3010) and should not be confused with it.
To place the Frost family in context: In the Roscolux/Cinegel Frost series, only numbers 102 (Light Tough Frost) and 103 (Tough Frost) include the "Tough Frost" designation; 100 is Frost and 101 is Light Frost. Opal Tough Frost is lighter and more transparent than the denser grades in this series (Rosco 100 to 103).
On-Set Use
Opal Tough Frost is typically used directly on the lighting fixture (e.g., in filter frames, on barn doors, or over the lens assembly) to mitigate hard light sources without sacrificing beam control. Rosco explicitly recommends it as a diffuser for HMI, CID, and CSI sources, as it slightly softens the beam while maintaining high transmission.
- Smooths out irregular beam patterns and removes the harshness from the light without losing directionality.
- Retains a bright core (hotspot) – unlike stronger diffusers that make the light more even and omnidirectional.
- Heat-resistant, durable base material, designed for use close to hot lights.
Available Formats
Like most Rosco gels, Opal Tough Frost is offered as individual sheets and rolls. Common sizes available from specialist dealers include a 20" x 24" sheet (approx. 51 x 61 cm) and a 48" x 25' roll (approx. 122 cm width x approx. 7.6 m length).
There is no official percentage transmission figure for Opal Tough Frost published by the manufacturer; Rosco qualitatively describes its light transmission as "excellent."
