Rosco LED light with built-in 4K video projector (200W–1,800W) for dynamic background and window effects, combining illumination with projection.

Technical Details

The DMG series includes models such as DMG Dash, DMG Mini, and DMG Maxi with power ratings between 200W and 1,800W. Each unit features an integrated media player that plays H.264/H.265 encoded videos in 4K resolution. The color temperature is continuously adjustable between 2,700K and 6,500K, with a CRI value of 95+. The projection optics operate with a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and enable projection sizes from 0.5 to 50 meters. Up to 99 devices can be controlled simultaneously via DMX512, Art-Net, or the proprietary MyMix app.

History & Development

Rosco developed DMG technology starting in 2016 in response to the growing demand for LED virtual production solutions. In 2018, the first DMG model was presented at NAB, coinciding with the boom in LED wall technology in Hollywood. Further development followed the requirements of "The Mandalorian" (2019) and other virtual production projects. In 2021, Rosco introduced the second generation with improved brightness and expanded codec support.

Practical Application in Film

DMG fixtures are primarily used as background projectors, for example, for window gags or dynamic backgrounds. In "Stranger Things" Season 4, DMG units simulated moving shadows and light reflections from passing cars. In automotive advertising, they project street scenes or landscapes onto green screen backgrounds. The workflow includes preparing video content in post-production, loading it onto SD cards, and synchronizing via timecode. Advantage: Realistic light interaction with actors and objects. Disadvantage: Limited resolution compared to LED walls.

Comparison & Alternatives

DMG fixtures differ from pure LED panels through their integrated projection function and from video projectors through their additional lighting function. Alternatives include Blackmagic Video Assist monitors with connected LED panels or separate projector-light combinations from Arri (SkyPanel + projector setup). For large-scale virtual production, studios rely on LED walls from ROE or Samsung, while DMG units excel in pinpoint projections and smaller productions. The choice depends on projection size, budget, and desired light output.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
