Rosco #114 "Hamburg Frost" is a light diffusion gel by Rosco that subtly softens light sources with minimal diffusion.

Overview

Rosco #114 "Hamburg Frost" is a diffusion filter (English: diffusion or frost) from the US manufacturer Rosco. It is explicitly not a color correction or effect gel, but a color-neutral diffusion medium that breaks up and softens the light from a source without significantly altering its color temperature.

Within the Rosco range, the 114 is considered one of the very light frosts. The official manufacturer description is essentially "a very light frost; well suited for followspots and PAR lamps." The number 114 appears in several Rosco product lines – both in the theater/stage series Roscolux and in the more heat-resistant Supergel series – each under the name "Hamburg Frost."

Classification within the Hamburg Frost Family

The "Hamburg Frost" filters form their own subgroup of diffusers at Rosco, distinguished by varying degrees of diffusion. The 114 is one of the lightest variants, minimally impacting the light's characteristics.

  • #114 Hamburg Frost – very light frost (subtle diffusion)
  • #140 Subtle Hamburg Frost – an even more subtle variant of the same family

Due to its low light loss and soft edge effect, the 114 is traditionally used on followspots and PAR lights to smooth out hard beam edges without significantly reducing light output.

Set Application

On film and stage sets, the 114 is used to slightly "roughen up" a light source: hard-edged shadows are minimally softened, and the beam edge becomes a bit softer, while brightness and beam focus are largely maintained. This makes it the choice when you want to soften a source just enough so that it no longer appears perfectly hard, but still remains clearly directed.

The filter is processed like standard lighting gels: stretched in front of the light source in a filter frame, gel frame, or barndoor, or (if the respective product line is sufficiently heat-resistant) placed directly in front of the fixture. It is available from specialty dealers in industry-standard formats, typically as sheets of approximately 20 × 24 inches (approx. 508 × 610 mm) and as rolls (e.g., 24 inches × 25 feet).

Note

An exact, manufacturer-verified transmission value (Transmission in %) was not reliably available in the sources reviewed; "100%" values appearing in dealer listings should be considered unreliable template placeholders. The official technical data sheet from Rosco for the respective product line (Roscolux or Supergel) is definitive.
