Overview
"Rosco 80" refers to the color gel Roscolux #80 "Primary Blue" from the manufacturer Rosco. It is not a light fixture or grip equipment, but a color filter (gel) from the Roscolux series – one of the most common color and diffusion filter ranges for theater, live events, as well as film and TV.
The #80 is a deep saturated blue from the primary color spectrum. It is designed as one of the three primary colors (along with a primary red and a primary green filter) for additive three-color mixing – classically used for illuminating backgrounds and cycloramas (cyc).

Roscolux filters are body-dyed plastic films (extruded polycarbonate or deep-dyed polyester) and are mounted in front of the light fixture. The low transmission of around 9% is typical for such strong saturation – correspondingly high is the light loss of about 3.5 stops.
Use on Set
The #80 is primarily used for colored background and cyc lighting, often in three-color systems for additive color mixing. Due to the significant light loss, its use with powerful light fixtures or on bright, reflective surfaces is recommended.
- As a sheet, the filter is cut to size and clamped or taped in front of the reflector or light fixture.
- In additive three-color systems, it provides the blue channel of the RGB mix.
- With saturated filters of this type, ensure sufficient distance and ventilation to the light fixture to prevent premature fading due to heat.
