Overview
Rosco #3442 is a lighting filter (gel) from the Cinegel range by US manufacturer Rosco. The designation is "Half Straw" or 1/2 CTS (Color Temperature Straw). It is a color conversion filter that lowers the color temperature of a light source, making cooler light warmer.
The CTS family ("Straw") is an alternative to the classic CTO ("Color Temperature Orange") range. According to Rosco, #3442 is a yellower (less red) version of 1/2 CTO. This results in a straw-yellow rather than orange character with comparable correction effect – useful when you want warmth without the pronounced red cast of classic CTO.

The filter is offered in various formats, including sheets (20" × 24"), rolls (e.g., 24" × 25' and 48" × 25'), and as RoscoSleeve – a tube to slip over fluorescent tubes.
Set Usage
#3442 is placed in front of a daylight or untinted light source to make it appear warmer – for example, to approximate HMI or LED daylight to warmer environments or to create a sunny, golden look. As a "Half" (1/2), it provides moderate correction; for stronger or weaker warmth, there are graduated densities within the Straw range.
Compared to CTO, gaffers and gipsy choose the Straw variant when the look should appear yellowish-warm instead of orange-reddish. As with all conversion filters, light loss must be factored in: with 73% transmission, about a quarter of the light is lost.
