Overview
Rosco 3027 (product code also R3027) is a diffusion filter from the Cinegel range by manufacturer Rosco. Its official designation is Tough 1/2 White Diffusion, often abbreviated in the industry as 1/2 216. It is a light-shaping filter material (gel/film) for film lighting – not equipment or grip gear, and not a color correction filter. The film is stretched or clipped in front of a light fixture to transform hard light into softer, diffused light.
The 3027 belongs to the family of "Tough White Diffusion" films. Its characteristics are equivalent to the full Tough White Diffusion (Rosco 3026 / 216), but it is less dense. This makes it a medium-strength diffuser: it scatters light noticeably but absorbs less brightness than the full version, falling between the full 216 and weaker diffusions like 1/4 White Diffusion.
Properties
- Function: Diffusion – creates an even, soft light field and softens hard shadows and edges.
- Density: half strength ("1/2") of full Tough White Diffusion (216); medium scattering effect.
- Color Behavior: as a white diffusion without significant color shift – it primarily changes the scattering, not the color temperature.
- Material: robust, heat-resistant base made of deep-dyed polyester, designed for use close to hot light sources.

On-Set Use
The 3027 is a standard diffusion for softening light fixtures. Typical applications:
- Stretched in front of tungsten or HMI sources to create a larger, softer light area – for example, for key lights and portraits.
- Reducing hard cast shadows and specular highlights without darkening the light as much as the full 216.
- As a finer gradation in a diffusion set, combining 1/4, 1/2, and full Tough White Diffusion to control the degree of diffusion.
- In the sleeve variant for diffusing or unifying fluorescent tubes.
Cinegel has been Rosco's professional filter line since 1970; Rosco received an Academy Award (Oscar) in 1974 for the development of Cinegel products.
