Overview
"Rosco 253" refers to the diffusion filter E-Colour+ #253 "Hanover Frost" from Rosco's filter range. It is not a light source, an ANSI lamp code, or grip equipment, but a filter sheet (gel) that is stretched in front of a spotlight, flat light, or window to diffuse the light.
#253 belongs to the lightest diffusion grades ("Light Frost"). It only scatters light gently, slightly smooths hard shadows, and reduces the contrast between highlights without significantly altering the light's characteristics or costing much brightness. It is less effective than denser diffusions like Opal Frost.
Since Rosco E-Colour+ and LEE Filters use the same European filter numbering, the same number #253 at LEE is named "Hampshire Frost". Both designations refer to materially the same filter family.

The filter is sufficiently heat-resistant for use in front of daylight and tungsten spotlights; the exact temperature limits depend on the fixture type and distance.
On-Set Usage
#253 is used when light needs to be broken minimally, for example, to soften the edge of a spotlight, slightly soften a key light, or calm reflections on skin and surfaces without losing the directed character of the light. Due to its very low brightness loss, it is well-suited when light output is limited.
- Gentle softening of key lights and accent lights
- Slight smoothing of shadows and highlights
- Pre-stage within a diffusion series (from Light Frost to Full Opal)
Comparable, slightly differently graded diffusions from the Rosco Supergel range include #101 "Light Frost" and #114 "Hamburg Frost".
