Rosco E-Colour+ #251 "Quarter White Diffusion"—a light polyester diffusion filter for subtle softening of light output.

Overview

Rosco 251 refers to the filter gel E-Colour+ #251 "Quarter White Diffusion" manufactured by Rosco. It is not a lighting fixture, a grip device, or a lamp code, but a diffusion gel (scrim) from the E-Colour+ series, which is stretched in front of a light source or inserted into a filter frame to soften the light.

Rosco's "White Diffusion" family includes several gradations, staggered by diffusion strength. #251 ("Quarter") is one of the weaker grades, producing a slight softening of the light. It is positioned below the stronger grades #216 (Full) and #250 (Half), while there are even weaker grades with #252 ("Eighth") and #452 (1/16). Compared to stronger diffusions, #251 retains more directional character, meaning shadows remain comparatively pronounced.

On-Set Usage

#251 is used when the light only needs to be subtly diffused – for example, to slightly smooth the edges of a light source without significantly reducing the light output or shadow definition. Due to the low light loss of around one-third of a stop, it is well-suited when the brightness needs to be largely maintained.

  • Slight softening of hard light (Fresnel lenses, PARs, open-face halogen/HMI sources).
  • One of the weaker grades within the staggered White Diffusion series; below #216 (Full) and #250 (Half), above #252 (Eighth) and #452 (1/16).
  • Available as sheets and rolls.

Note: Diffusion gels are heat-sensitive; depending on the base material and the lamp's wattage, ensure sufficient distance from the light source.
