Rosco #250 Half White Diffusion: a medium-strength diffusion gel from the E-Colour+ range that softens and evens out hard light.

Overview

Rosco #250 Half White Diffusion is a diffusion filter manufactured by Rosco. It is part of the European filter range E-Colour+, whose numbering follows the naming convention established by Lee. It is not a piece of equipment or a lamp code, but a consumable (expendable) that is stretched in front of a light fixture, a window, or in a frame.

The filter diffuses the light passing through it, thereby increasing the effective light source. Hard, direct light becomes softer, shadows become milder, and the light coverage becomes more even. The "Half" designation indicates a medium strength within the White Diffusion series of E-Colour+, which Rosco states comprises seven levels of strength in total – common grades include Quarter (#251), Half (#250), and Full (#216).

In Rosco's US range, Cinegel, there is no identically named "White Diffusion" line. Comparable diffusion effects are achieved there through differently named products (e.g., #3026 Tough White Diffusion). The White Diffusion series is therefore specific to E-Colour+ (formerly the Lee naming convention).

Technical Data

The following values are provided by the manufacturer or consistently by specialist retailers:

PropertyValue
Designation#250 Half White Diffusion
RangeE-Colour+
Light Transmissionapprox. 60 %
Light Lossapprox. 3/4 stop
Base MaterialPolyester
Flame Retardancyaccording to BS 3944 Part 1

The filter shifts the color temperature only slightly and is considered largely color-neutral. It is sold as sheets as well as rolls in various sizes; a common roll width is around 1.22 m (48 inches).

On-Set Usage

Half White is chosen when a clearly visible but not maximal softening effect is desired – for example, between the subtle Quarter and the strong Full White diffusion. Typical applications:

  • Softening hard artificial light sources for smoother skin and facial illumination
  • Evening out light fields, for example with large-area lights or as an attachment to softboxes and frames
  • Muting window light or reducing contrast

The filter is placed at a distance from the lamp or stretched in diffusion frames to avoid heat buildup and damage. Like all diffusion filters, it costs light output (here, around 3/4 stop), which must be considered in exposure planning.
